The NYPD has a long history of police brutality. Here are some of the most notorious cases:
1. Abner Louima.
Abner Louima was not killed by the NYPD, but he was treated like an animal by an out of control officer.
Justin Volpe
Officer Justin Volpe sodomized Mr. Louima witha broomstick and then told him he would kill him if he told anyone. Officer Volpe was ultimately sentenced to 30 years in jail and Mr. Louima was awarded $5.8 million.This is such a horrible case, it is difficult to think why Volpe did that.
2. Sean Bell
Sean Bell was shott over 50 times by the NYPD despit the fact that he did not have a weapon. Officers simply opened fire on him while he was sitting in h is car.
3. Amadou Diallo
Diallo was an African immigrant who was shot and killed by the NYPD even though he only had a wallet on him. The officers were cleared of criminal charges at triall.
4. Randolph Evans
15 year old Randolph Evans was shot and killed on Thanksgiving Night in 1976. Officer, Robert Torsney, was called to a housing project in Brooklyn to investigate a man with a gun. He met with group of young black men and proceeded to shoot the unarmed Evans for no given reason. Although he never was treated for epilepsy, Torsney’s defense maintained that he killed Evans because of a rare case of epilepsy and he was acquitted on the grounds of mental insanity.
5. Alberta Spruil.
Alberta Spruil was killed by the NYPD when she suffered a heart attack when the NYPD wrongly knocked down her door looking for drugs. The died and her family settled the case for $1.6 million.
